Dam weather

If only Australian politicians had listened to Tim Flannery’s warnings about how global warming would cause permanent drought, they wouldn’t have needed to open the spillways on the Warragamba dam this weekend.

Wait, what?

awkward

Flannery, five years ago:

Flannery predicted cities such as Brisbane would never again have dam-filling rains, as global warming had caused “a 20 per cent decrease in rainfall in some areas” and made the soil too hot, “so even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and river systems … “.

Pesky Gaia always waits five years before making fools of warmists.

It might fall to non-Australian blogs to cover stories like this in the future, because Julia Gillard wants her opposition to SHUT UP:

Mr. Ray Finkelstein QC, a left-wing former Federal Court Judge with no media experience, at the request of the Gillard Government, issued a 400 page report which calls for a Big Brother Super-Regulator to ‘regulate’ political speech and – among other things – impose new laws with the power to stop climate change realists from speaking up.

Simon of Australian Climate Madness Menzies House has set up a website to protest this move toward censorship. There is a petition, which needs signing. You know what to do.

*Corrected to attribute the protest web site to Menzies House, with apologies to Simon, who was too busy to do it, or something.

  1. Thanks for the links. Just a small correction: it isn’t me who has set up the website, it’s the Menzies House organisation. But Australians should be very worried about these draconian proposals.

  2. The problem Ms Gillard has is that the majority of people already know what a scam climate change really is.What she and the Greens are trying to do is close the flood gates(excuse the pun) when it is to late to do so.The Labor party’s chances of being reelected particularly if this blatant effort to shut down freedom of speech happens, are zero. They had the chance to remove a very bad leader, not that Mr Rudd would have been a much better choice, and blew the opportunity. If this gets through parliment they should all start looking for alternative employment now because the election is getting closer and closer as each day passes.Lets hope the LiberalNationals have learnt something from the worst government in Australia’s history and do not continue with their communist agenda.

  3. Stanno, you’re assuming the next election will actually take place. I wouldn’t be too sure of that.

  4. Beale there will be an election in 2013 or are you saying this communist government won’t allow one to happen. If that was to occur i can imagine the reaction of the electorate,i don’t think it would be to pretty do you.

  5. From SEQ Water site: (http://www.seqwater.com.au/public/dam-levels)

Somerset Dam stats at 05/March/2012 07:00AM

    Full Supply Capacity: 379,849ML
    Current Capacity: 388,788ML (100.0% full)

Wivenhoe Dam stats at 05/March/2012 07:00AM

    Full Supply Capacity: 1,165,238ML
    Current Capacity: 889,857ML (76.4% full)
    Flood Mitigation: 1,450,000 ML

It would appear that almost EVERY dam in South-East Queensland is full and spilling at this moment.

The major exception is Wivenhoe, which is apparently being kept at below 80% “Full Supply Capacity” in order to maintain some margin for flood mitigation.

If these figures are correct, then someone may have learned from last year’s debacle. Back then; when the water level in Wivenhoe rose to the point where water over-topped the rock-cut spillway, it was almost too late when the floodgates in the central tower were opened. In the time-honoured tradition, this sustained release of water coincided with the arrival of floodwater coming down the Bremer and Lockyer.

As of the time of writing, there is a very large, slowly rotating low-pressure system cheerfully dumping a lot of water into the Brisbane and Stanley catchments. Interesting side note: Engineering works enlarged the capacity of the Hinze Dam in the gold Coast hinterland, from 161,073 ML to 310,730 ML on Friday 15 July 2011.

It is currently officially at 89.1% of its NEW capacity. In order to do the work to upgrade the wall, a lot of water was released. Since the upgrade to capacity was completed on 19 Dec 2011, the water behind the wall has gone from a little over 40% of the new capacity to about 90%.

  6. @bruce : yes, Wivenhoe has been releasing continuously all summer to maintain a large flood buffer, as was the original design intention. In 2010/11 this was ignored because the government had amassed billions in debt building a desalination plant (because it was never going to rain again). So, while the smoking gun hasn’t been found, it’s likely that the order went out to let the dam fill up because each litre of water now is a valuable resource to be sold back to the taxpayers.

The baskerds actually let millions of megalitres out of the dam to lower it this year – do you think they let any of the residents have some for free? No. Straight down the river for all that water, and here’s your bill, sir. What’s that? Sure, it’s double what it was 3 years ago, but we’re in a drought that will never end, you know. Climate change, you see. Tim Flannery told us so.

By the way, said Desalination plant has been idle since it was completed. A multi-billion dollar factory that produces nothing but still costs millions to run, because the government signed a contract with the plant owners to buy water whether they needed it or not.

Some of us want to scream at the madness.

  7. Too funny . . the Aussie version of the English looney tune Claimte scientist who said English children would never see snow or today the Canadian maroons who said outdoor skating is doomed because of glowbal warming.

Remember Wivenhoe and that people died because they believed the droughts were permanent and water had to be preserved.

What’s a few dead people to a Warmonger?

  8. We hear Mr Flannery denies ever making statements about never having dam filling rain again. Watch out for references being censored off the internet. Make copies of the references to bring out if required.I agree with Beale’s comment- Labor will find some excuse to not have an election in 2013. Look at what they are doing now with the media inquiry – you would think we live in the Communist Soviet Union or Nazi Germany . Do note, there is very little difference between Nazism and Communism. The Nazis(National Socialists) were born of the green socialist movement.
